But just because you have this platform does not mean you should share everything—especially about your relationship. Sadly, not many people seem to understand this concept of keeping some things private. To avoid committing any social media boo-boos, here’s a piece of relationship advice on what not to post on social media:

• Don’t rant about your problems online.

Posting about your problems shouldn’t be the first thing to do (or at all). Instead, both of you should resolve it before it escalates. If you make a post about your conflict, you are dragging other people into the mess and indirectly giving them licence to interfere with your problems. Some of them might even judge you or your girlfriend wrongly.

• Don’t share personal details about your relationship or significant other.

Even if you aren’t ashamed to let the public know about your relationship, there have to be some things you should keep to yourselves alone. More importantly, you don’t have the right to reveal information she shared with you in confidence. This is a clear breach of trust and privacy. If you want to share something about her or your relationship, get permission from her first. And if she says no, better respect her decision. After all, the information was hers to share to begin with—not yours.

• Don’t try to seek sympathy from others whenever something goes wrong.

Here’s another reason it’s not a good idea to air out your dirty laundry on social media: Not only would this involve other people, you’re also putting them in compromising positions (especially your mutual friends). They might feel like they have to choose a side. Besides, if the point is to seek relationship advice for couples or even some dating tips, you can always do it privately.

• Don’t post pictures of your extravagant gifts.

No one likes a showoff, even if that showoff is in love. As much as you love your girlfriend, there’s other ways to express that without rubbing it in other people’s faces. It’s also quite risky to post pictures of luxurious gifts. The wrong person might see it and get the idea of stealing it from you or your girlfriend.

• Don’t joke about your girlfriend on social media.

Even if you think it is harmless or cheeky, she might find it offensive (even more so if you’ve posted it online). While there’s nothing wrong with showing your sense of humor, you don’t have to poke fun at other people’s expense. If you still think some things about your girlfriend are funny, at least get the go signal from her first.

There’s plenty of other relationship advice online, but the point is to keep your relationships mostly to yourselves. The reason why you should keep relationship and other personal details to yourself is to prevent other people from using this information against you.

Ultimately, there’s only two of you in the relationship, so why should you advertise it to everybody else? Relationships are always going to be a challenge (especially when you are dating a foreign lady). But there’s no reason to make it all the more difficult by oversharing on social media.
